Why Barcelona, Al-Nassr, and Liverpool Won't Play in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 is set to be one of the most prestigious tournaments in club football history, featuring 32 elite teams from around the world. But to the surprise of many fans, three of the most popular clubs in global football—Barcelona, Al-Nassr, and Liverpool—will not be participating. Here's why these giants won't be on the pitch.

🔵 FC Barcelona: Left Out by Rankings and Rules

UEFA was allocated 12 slots for the Club World Cup. Three of those were automatically given to the recent Champions League winners: Chelsea (2021), Real Madrid (2022), and Manchester City (2023). The remaining nine spots were decided based on the UEFA club coefficient ranking from 2021 to 2024.

However, FIFA set a limit: no more than two clubs from the same country, unless additional clubs had won the Champions League. Spain already had Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid qualifying under these conditions. Barcelona, despite their rich history, didn't qualify because they were ranked below Atletico Madrid due to poor recent European performances.

🟡 Al-Nassr: Star Power Isn't Enough

Despite being home to global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr won't be in the tournament. The AFC (Asian Football Confederation) has four allocated spots:

Three went to the winners of the AFC Champions League from 2021 to 2023: Al-Hilal, Urawa Red Diamonds, and Al-Ain.

One final spot was given to the highest-ranked club over the 2021–2024 period.

Al-Nassr failed to win any AFC Champions League title in that window and also didn't top the club ranking list. So, despite their fame, they didn’t meet FIFA’s qualification requirements.

🔴 Liverpool: Victim of England's Strong Competition

Liverpool, like Barcelona, missed out due to UEFA's country limit rule. England's two qualifying spots went to:

Chelsea, as Champions League winners in 2021

Manchester City, as winners in 2023

Even though Liverpool had strong performances during the qualification period, the two-club-per-country rule meant there was no room left for them.

📈 Summary Table

Club Reason for Missing Out

Barcelona Ranked below Atletico; Spain already had 2 qualifiers

Al-Nassr Didn't win AFC CL; not high enough in club rankings

Liverpool England's 2 spots already taken by Chelsea & Man City

🔍 Final Thoughts

The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 showcases the importance of consistent international performance and strategic wins. Star players and club legacy aren't enough—clubs need to deliver in continental competitions. For Barcelona, Al-Nassr, and Liverpool, this is a wake-up call to up their game in future campaigns.
